A Shimmer in the Dark

A Shimmer in the Dark is a speculative climate fiction LARP (Live Action Role-Playing) that envisions a world at the brink of the post-extraction era, where petroleum and human labor are fading into history. This immersive experience explores our evolving relationship with the unknown as we confront the end of an era.

In A Shimmer in the Dark, you will play as workers on an oil rig in the North Sea. With deep-sea drilling nearing its conclusion due to pressure from environmental activists and the depletion of Earth's fossil fuel resources, this is your final shift on the rig. During these last hours, you and your fellow workers make an extraordinary discovery from the ocean's depths. As you wait to be picked up, you must decide what to do with this mysterious finding while contemplating an uncertain future in an increasingly automated world where the need for human labor is rapidly diminishing.

No prior LARP experience is needed to participate — just bring your enthusiasm and embrace the joy of playfulness, even in serious circumstances. A workshop will be held beforehand to help you get into character and learn the rules, followed by an after-discussion to reflect on and process the experience.

The game happens over a span of four scenes. Each of the scenes plays in the living room of the oil rig and holds the potential for interactions with the deep sea creature. In between the scenes an emergency alarm goes off and workers have to perform labour under the stress of an emergency. The game ends with the arrival of the helicopters picking up the workers from the oil rig.
